It was the 18th Mission in the Chain and was named for Saint Louis IX, a French king from the 1200’s. The phrase San Luis, Rey de Francia is Spanish for �Saint Louis, King of France.� Although the site was chosen almost 30 years earlier by Father Juan Crespi, Father Lasuen dedicated the Mission on June 13, 1798.
